I had the fun session of being told off in this manner during a long-awaited coffee session with my patient-turned-friend. His exact words were:
"Nigel, stop being a pussy. Get out there and go do what you're meant to do and supposed to to. Stop thinking like a therapist and think like a businessman!"
Of course, I was asking for it since I was sharing my challenges with a smart-motor-mouth-but-means-very-well friend.
Having that conversation with him was one of the best decisions and moments in my defining life. It was a kick in the balls/ass/gonads for me, and though it didn't shake or worry me, it did spark a thought in my mind and heart.
I asked myself: have I chickened out? If yes, since when?
Has it been because of all the trials and challenges since 2010? I run a physiotherapy and hand therapy business in Singapore with my wife, Louise. She's the physiotherapist and I'm the hand therapist, and we've run it since 2008. To grow the business, we've been opening clinics since 2010 but we've been hit with setbacks after setbacks where soon after a clinic opens, we had to close it because of external problems, or having poor paymasters etc.
Perhaps it was since then that I had backed down, and chickened out. In other words, I've turned into a pussy.
Damn it.
You're not alone. I face this all the time, and I didn't even realize that I've turned fearful from the beginning of 2010, which is already two years at this point of publication. I'm quite certain that you too have your fair share of challenges, where obstacles/people/troubles/challenges turn to you, spit in your face and scream into your face that you are worthless, unable to make it, and will amount to nothing.
You are not alone.
We all face challenges. We all will face tough times. Will you consider accepting challenges as a part and parcel of growth in your life? Financial challenges will allow you to grow financially. Business challenges will allow you to grow your business. Relationship challenges will allow you to grow your relationships.
Each and every one of the challenge that you face has a specific goal and target that will help you to grow in its particular area.
But that can only happen if you put on a mindset of understanding the role of problem and challenges in your life rather than just asking "OH WHY ME??" and take a victim approach to life and it's challenges.
So our challenges has been primarily in growing our business, and having to keep relocating keeps us from growing. This year in 2012, we have secured a partnership and a good place to grow, and we've been here for a good five months for now, finances have stabilised and we are poised at a good position geographically, financially and clinically to grow.
My focus is to increase the number of leads and sales through the acquisition of referral sources, the maintenance of the relationships with the referral sources, for increased clinical delivery by hiring competent staff and to grow the team.
I've started the ball rolling now - what about you?
